Erin's Story

I was lucky—I got my cancer at the right time. Had I been diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma 10 years ago, I would not have received the life-saving CAR-T therapy that has emerged thanks to advances in medical research.

After three rounds of chemo proved ineffective, we transitioned to CAR-T therapy. This innovative treatment was FDA approved in 2017 and involves extracting my T-cells, sending them to a lab where they are genetically modified to create cancer-fighting cells specific to my cancer, multiplying them, and infusing them back into my body. The new CAR-T cells quickly found and destroyed cancer cells.

Remarkably, 90 days after the infusion, the huge (22cm x 10cm x 9cm) tumor in my spleen and other hotspots throughout my lymphatic system were gone. This is what science can do, and to me, it feels like a miracle.

As I reflect on my journey, I am inspired by the visionaries of the year who are tirelessly working on blood cancer fundraising to support others in their fight against similar battles.
